As well as having presentations and discussion from the students, the consortium will also feature guest events from well known HCI academics from the UK and further afield. The consortium is partially funded by the BCS (British Computer Society) and to that end, participants are expected to support the aims of the BCS and will be offered, and expected to take up, a special rate for BCS membership.

WHO IS IT AIMED AT?
Submissions to the PhD consortium are invited from PhD candidates from any country. Candidates are expected to be at a stage in their studies where they have at least developed a proposal for their research, and should ideally also have a problem statement, one or more research questions and an idea about an appropriate methodology. Normally students within six months of completion get little from the DC as they are too close to completion. Application to the DC requires an abstract of the research done to date as well as a supporting letter from a supervisor or director of the PhD programme.

ORGANISATION
The DC is a friendly event that aims to give all students participating a chance to critically reflect on their PhD work. In order to ensure this, numbers are limited. The event is over a single day (7th September) but students participating are expected to be available to attend the DC dinner on the evening of the 6th September (eta 7.30pm) and are expected to participate in the full conference programme as student volunteers.

LOCATION AND COSTS
The consortium will be held at the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland. There are no fees for DC candidates and accommodation will be included for the period 6th – 9th September. Travel to the event is NOT included, however it can be possible to make an application for support if travel costs might prevent attendance.

SUBMISSION
Submissions by PhD candidates are sought which include a research proposal by the PhD candidate which includes motivation, research question, research design /methodology (min 2, max 4 pages, ACM format). A statement by the supervisor or PhD programme director about the status of the PhD candidate and a recommendation that he or she will benefit from the consortium.

This should be sent by email to jcread@uclan.ac.uk
Deadline for submissions is 30th July 2010 – acceptance will be confirmed by the 7th August 2010.
Consortium chair: Dr Janet C Read, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK

CfP: SenseCam 2010

Deadine: 1 August 2010
ABOUT
The SenseCam 2010 Symposium will be held in one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, the Guinness Storehouse. Mobile applications are one of the major driving factors, as they can easily be distributed through dedicated mobile application distribution platforms, e.g. Apple's App Store, Google's Android Market. Additionally many smart phones have a lot of sensors integrated, which makes them more and more aware of the situation a user is in.

At the same time the usage of mobile devices is rapidly becoming an integrated part of everyday life. This means that in order to understand the user experience and the usability of a product it is in general not enough to perform studies in the laboratory. Instead the mobile context needs to be taken into account explicitly, and one needs to be able to study users and usage "in the wild". The challenge of understanding a mobile user experience is a rapidly evolving field, and it is the purpose of this workshop to bring together people from industry and academia in order to exchange methods and experiences related to understanding the mobile user and the mobile usage.

In this workshop we want to discuss the most important factors, parameters, and research questions about how to study and involve users in a truly mobile setting. The goal of the workshop is to provide an overview of available methods and techniques, but also to produce a set of guidelines for studying and interacting with users in a mobile setting. The workshop will focus on the process and methodologies and will not go into deeper technical details (e.g. algorithms for activity recognition).

Topics
------
Topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Observing and interacting with a user on the move
* Unsupervised data gathering
* The mobile device as a platform for user studies
* Specific situations and key parameters
* Mixed methods in a mobile setting
* Ethical considerations
* Safety and security of study participants

Submission details
------------------
Anyone interested in participating is invited to submit a position paper or an industrial case study to the workshop organizers. Authors of accepted papers are expected to present their work at the workshop by giving a 10-15 minutes presentation.

Submissions of papers covering the topics of the workshop should be submitted by 27th of August 2010. Position papers (2 to 4 pages) and industrial case studies (1 to 2 pages) should be submitted in NordiCHI ACM format.

Notification of acceptance will be sent out 10th of September 2010. At least one author from each accepted submission is expected to attend the workshop. Accepted submission will be compiled in the workshop proceedings which will also contain the guidelines resulting from the workshop activity. The proceedings will be made available at the workshop website.

Submissions or other queries should be mailed to Benjamin Poppinga (poppinga@offis.de).

Schedule
--------
August 27, 2010 - Submission Deadline
September 10, 2010 - Notification of Acceptance
October 1, 2010 - Camera Ready Deadline
October 17, 2010 - Workshop Date

Organising Committee
--------------------
Benjamin Poppinga, OFFIS - Institute for Information Technology
Charlotte Magnusson, Lund University
Wilko Heuten, OFFIS - Institute for Information Technology
David McGookin, University of Glasgow
Niels Henze, University of Oldenburg
Ginger B. Information privacy and security requires technology, people, processes and policies. To design and deploy private and secure systems, we require an understanding of how people perceive, understand, and act on privacy /security risks and threats.

The first Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security (SOUPS) was held July 6-8, 2005 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. SOUPS has grown with regard to the amount of submissions and number of attendees. Although SOUPS is an international conference, it is based in the USA. During the last five years the number of European’s attending has increased and as a result we have collaborated with the SOUPS team and agreed to the formation of a EuroSOUPS. EuroSOUPS will offer the opportunity for academics, researchers and developers in the fields of privacy and security to discuss and present their work. This workshop is intended to bring together people with an interest in usable security and privacy from a wide variety of backgrounds to discuss, plan and develop EuroSOUPS into a working group.

ISSUES FOR CONSIDERATION INCLUDE:
1)	Discussion on how to run EuroSOUPS in collaboration with SOUPS
2)	Bring together a multidisciplinary community to organise and plan EuroSOUPS events
3)	Bring together a broad base of European usable privacy and security practitioners (currently mainly an American focus)

GOALS:
The following are the goals of the workshop:
1) Identify members and structure for the working group
2) Form collaborative networks for future research

EXPECTED STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION
The workshop will provide a forum for those interested in privacy and security to interact and discuss the development, structure and organisation of EuroSOUPS. The first session will include an overview of SOUPS and EuroSOUPS followed by a series of short presentations. Participants will be asked to give a brief overview of their work and ideas on how best to develop EuroSOUPS. Small, hopefully multidisciplinary, groups will use brainstorming activities to develop EuroSOUPS. The groups will swap ideas, evaluate and then refine them reaching agreement on how best to develop EuroSOUPS.

EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS
The workshop will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in the privacy and security and the development of EuroSOUPS. Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest and familiarity with the topic. Contributions will be circulated beforehand and posted on the workshop website (http://www.cocolab.org/soups/eurosoups).

FORMAT AND SUBMISSION
The workshop is designed as a one-day mix of presentations and group discussions. Please send your contributions by 1st October 2010 to l.little@northumbria.ac.uk
The 2-page submission should include a brief overview of the participants own research in the areas of privacy and/or security, their contribution to the fields and ideas on how to develop EuroSOUPS. Acceptance notifications will be sent on or before 22nd October 2010. Both lone developers and large research and development teams can now relatively easily reach wide audiences. This provides a huge opportunity for both iterative development and gathering research data. Evaluation and research methods have to be adapted to this new context. An overview of successful strategies and ways to overcome the challenges inherent to wide deployment in a research context ranging from platform characteristics to gathering reliable research data however is not yet available.

We invite you to submit your work for inclusion in a special issue of the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction. We invite researchers and developers from academia and industry to share experiences, insights and strategies for wide distribution of applications. Our focus is on building an understanding of the opportunity of the different channels and the issues and obstacles involved in a research context.

THEMES
Themes include:
- Strategies for wide distribution of research applications
- Methods & experiences with research through app stores and other distribution platforms
- The impact of differences between distribution platforms
- Analysis of the various sorts of data, logs and feedback resulting from publicly releasing applications
- Effects of mobile ecosystem features (distribution, payment, service providers etc) on research and evaluation results
- New developments of distribution channels / app stores (including those for other devices than mobile phones)
- Potential heading towards an 'app store bubble'
- Ethical & validity concerns in research on such a large scale

SUBMISSIONS
Submissions will be reviewed by a program committee consisting of researchers from both industry and academia. This new category is specifically targeted at the newest members of the academic /scientific community, that is, recent PhD graduates. A lot of PhD work gets published in a somewhat disjointed fashion as a series of papers, each covering distinct sub-components of the bigger PhD research picture.

The IJMCHI invites (on an ongoing basis) researchers who have recently (within 12 months) graduated with a PhD in a Mobile HCI-related topic to submit a comprehensive overview article of their PhD research. This category of submission to the IJMHCI will provide a unique opportunity to showcase, in a comprehensive and centralized fashion, the newest work of the newest members of the Mobile HCI research community. Submissions to this category will be processed on a rolling basis (ie no deadline) and must be accompanied by a letter of reference from the PhD supervisor to confirm that the PhD has been successfully awarded within the previous 12 months. The intention is that future issues of the IJMHCI will regularly contain a PhD overview article that will serve to introduce new members to the community and bring their fresh, new research themes and associated challenges into the collective consciousness of the community at large.

To this end, if you are a PhD student nearing completion or having just graduated, please do submit to the IJMHCI under this submission category. Alternatively, if you are the supervisor of eligible PhD students, please encourage your students to submit an overview article to the IJMHCI to showcase their research in a comprehensive fashion to the Mobile HCI community.

The general CfP and submission information is noted below. I hope this CFP also encourages the rest of the community to consider submitting to the IJMHCI – and we look forward to receiving your submissions in the future!

Dr. Joanna Lumsden
Editor-in-Chief
International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction

CALL FOR PAPERS
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOBILE HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION (IJMHCI)
Official publication of the Information Resources Management Association
Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Joanna Lumsden
Published: Quarterly (both in print and electronic form)

MISSION OF IJMHCI
Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for possible publication in the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction.
